Cuba Celebrates National Day of Protected Areas

The Sierra del Cristal National Park was approved as the first area protected from the Cuban territory, a day as today of 1930, motive for which every year celebrates the National Day of the Protected Areas on this day.

Due to the existence of big variety of ecosystems as this one in Cuba, in 1999 the government constituted the National System of Protected Areas, integrated by 211 surfaces of which someone show international recognition, six Reservations of Biosphere, six Ramsar sites, 28 IBAS and two places as World Natural Heritage of Humanity.

The target of this national system is to guarantee the conservation of the natural, historical and cultural values of the country. As well as to contribute to the sustainable development.

Another place, declared by UNESCO Reservation of Biosphere of Cuba, is the one called Sierra del Rosario, mountain system that spreads between the western provinces of Artemisa and Pinar del Rio.

Sierra del Rosario has an extension of 266,86 square kilometers and it is considered to be a "ecological laboratory" by the variety of flora and fauna in its territory.

In her there coexist birds as the muleteer, the mockingbird, herons, and the zunzuncito, in addition to more than 15 species of reptiles, of which 12 are indigenous like the lizard of river, exclusive of the area and at present in extinction danger; and the majá of Santa Maria, a boa species constriction of up to 6 meters.

There can still be in its mountains mammals as the jutías and the deer.

For these reasons, in 2010 ,it was proposed as Reservation of the Biosphere and was proposed as the Area Protected from Handled Resources, from an agreement of the Executive board of the Cabinet of Cuba.

The care and conservation of these areas in the island there have joined several institutions and organisms as the Department of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), in charge of looking over the relation between science, technology, use of the nuclear energy and environment, propitiating this way the coherent integration of these in the sustainable development of the country.
