Precipitation during the recently concluded rainy season (May-October) was within the normal range, with a national average of 969.5 millimeters, 97% of the historic average.

Rainfall in 78 municipalities surpassed their historic averages, 37 in the western region, seven in the island's central provinces, and 34 in the east.

At the end of October, the National Water Resources Institute (INRH) reported that the country's reservoirs held 5.177 billion cubic meters of water, or 57% of their capacity, with the useable portion reaching 4.495 billion (53%).

Despite the close to normal precipitation seen in 2016, accumulated deficits in water stored have not been overcome in several of the country's regions and efforts must continue to conserve water in all sectors, especially during the dry season now beginning.
