The Cuban Council of Ministers has approved the State Plan to tackle climate change and thus counteract the damage this phenomenon would cause to the country in coming years, Granma daily reports today.

The measure is based on research started by the Academy of Sciences in 1991, which were intensified after November 2004 due to a thorough analysis and debate on the negative impacts caused by Hurricanes Charley and Ivan in western Cuba.

The implementation of the document approved by the Council of Ministers, also known as ‘Tarea Vida', will require a progressive investment program that will be implemented at short (2020), mid (2030), long (2050) and very long (2100) terms.

Cuban Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, Elba Rosa Perez, stated that priority areas were identified taking into account the preservation of people's lives in the most vulnerable places, food security and tourism development.

‘Tarea Vida' includes a set of actions aimed at counteracting the effects in vulnerable areas, such as not allowing construction of new housing in coastal settlements and reducing areas of cultivation near the coast or damaged by marine intrusion into underground aquifers.

It also includes 11 tasks, among them ensuring the availability and efficient use of water as part of drought; manage reforestation towards maximum protection of soils; stop the deterioration of coral reefs; as well as implementing other measures in programs related to renewable energy, energy efficiency, food security, health and tourism.

Climate in the island is becoming more and more warm and extreme; great variability has been observed in cyclonic activity.

The country has been affected from 2001 to date by nine intense hurricanes, a unprecedented fact in history.
