For about 20 000 Guantanamo patients that suffer from diabetes mellitus, it is a guarantee multidisciplinary assistance received in the 23 services distributed in the province, an achievement that guarantees the best quality of life of those people and reduces mortality from this cause.
Pedro Dominguez Aldas, promoter of the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, explained that the primary health care guarantees that risk of amputation is reduced by 80 percent in those patients, thanks to early detection of ulcers and regular treatment with Heberprop P, which benefits more than three thousand Guantanamo patients since 2007.
The program of comprehensive care from polyclinics in the territory includes the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic neuropathy, kidney failure and cardiovascular disease associated with the disease, and the dissemination of guidelines for proper diet in patients.
This program also benefits pregnant women with gestational diabetes, children and adolescents, as well as patients with diabetic foot ulcers who are treated with the new and effective Cuban medicine Heberprot-P, patented in 19 countries.
As an important part of this assistance in Guantanamo, it is the work of the Care Center and Diabetic Education, an institution that integrates therapies, exchange activities with family and preventive measures to transform the lifestyle in these patients.
