With the aim of modifying behavirs, promoting knowledge and interest in breastfeeding children from birth to two years of age, this Friday began the International Breastfeeding Week in Guantanamo.
Dr. Humberto Velázquez Romero, provincial Director of the Mother and Child Program said that the territory shows 68 percent in that indicator, which requires raising awareness, not only to mothers, but to parents and family in general responsible for promoting a quiet environment so that postpartum women exclusively and freely up to six months breastfeed their newborn babies.
He also highlighted the importance of breast milk as the best infant food, as it contains all the necessary nutrients for the proper development of the newborn, providing great benefits for their immune system and long-term health by preventing obesity and favoring a higher intelligence quotient.
Similarly, he stressed that this procedure gives mothers a close bond with the baby, reduces postpartum depression, and prevents breast and ovarian cancer, as well as minimizing the risk of osteoporosis after menopause.
The International Breastfeeding Week, which began on August 1 and runs until day 7, is an incentive for postpartum women to post their young until two years of age, and voluntarily those who have enough milk may contribute to the Human milk bank, a gesture that helps improve the health of infants admitted due to low weight.
