    Guantanamo Successfully Performs Two New Clinical Trials

    General HospitalTwo new clinical trials for the development of two drugs for the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction (Amigos 2) and acute cerebral infarction of ischemic etiologies (Courage 2) have been successfully developed over a month at the General Teaching Hospital Dr. Agostinho Neto of Guantanamo.

     During a check-up visit, the PhD. Francisco Hernández Bernal, clinical head of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, an institution that sponsors both trials in some 15 hospitals in the country, praised the respect for the protocols and good clinical practices of the professionals who participate in these studies here.

    The experienced researcher explained that two candidates for high-priority pharmaceutical products for the Ministry of Public Health and the Biocubafarma business group, while responding to health problems of great prevalence among the Cuban and world population.

    The studies, which are in the phase of incorporating new patients and trials, are led by specialists in cardiology, in the case of Friends 2, and neurologists, to monitor the neuroprotector to which Courage 2 aspires to become, and groups clinicians, intensivists, Clinical Laboratory specialists and others.

    Hernández Bernal also recognized the professionalism of the specialists involved and the tradition of the Guantanamo General Hospital in conducting successful clinical trials already completed and in progress, related mainly to cancer diseases.

    Currently, Guantanamo hosts nine clinical trials sponsored by the CIGB and the Center for Molecular Immunology, fundamentally, including the Centauro project for ovarian cancer, both candidates for treating lung cancer in non-small and small cells, and advanced pancreatic cancer.

    More than 700 patients and dozens of professionals have benefited from the clinical trials that have been carried out in Guantanamo since 2002, while contributing to improving the quality of life of people and raising the scientific quality of the largest hospital in the province.
