Guantanamo – Nearly 4 thousand people were evacuated from the coastal municipality of San Antonio del Sur to the capital city of Guantanamo due to the threat of heavy rains and thunderstorms associated with two low pressure areas approaching the eastern region.
After the decision to establish the Information Phase for heavy rains starting at 10:00 hours on November 2, the Provincial Defense Council decided to transfer them in 40 trips to the centers designated for the protection of the people.
Care is guaranteed in educational institutions, the Universities of Guantanamo (UG) and its counterpart of Medical Sciences (UCMGT), the José Marcelino Maceo Grajales Vocational Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE), polytechnics and others authorized for these purposes.
Regarding the evacuation, the President of the Provincial Defense Council, Yoel Pérez García, exchanged with the population of San Antonio del Sur and explained to them the importance of moving them to safe places because the priority is to preserve the most precious asset: life.
The Provincial Defense Council directed the adoption of all measures in the municipalities affected by Hurricane Oscar, and residents in flood risk areas of Yateras, Manuel Tames and Guantanamo, in order to protect human and material resources from the already constant showers, and the rains and thunderstorms that are approaching the eastern end of Cuba.
It is a priority to notify the population through loudspeakers and from house to house, in addition to defining and preparing evacuation centers in each municipality, especially those affected in the East.
In these last territories, given the need to attend to vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women and the elderly, it was decided to evacuate part of the inhabitants to the provincial capital in educational institutions and other centers enabled for this purpose.
As on other occasions, part of the population evacuate to family homes, as long as they are safe and free of risk. Almost the entire population of the municipal capital of San Antonio del Sur will be evacuated, Yoannis Ortiz Cintra, president of the Municipal Defense Council of San Antonio del Sur, specified.
Yesterday at 2:00 pm, the transfers began in a progressive, orderly and safe manner. The conditions for the preparation of food, the transportation of the evacuees, and the transfer to safe areas of the donated resources to avoid their loss are also being checked.
The population is advised to stay informed through the media and official social media profiles and to comply with the instructions given by the authorities and Civil Defense Council.
