Guantánamo.- Oni Nector Sánchez del Campo Gainza, a 76-year-old retired dockworker, is starting a new life in the recently established “24 de Febrero” community in Buena Vista, in the municipality San Antonio del Sur, in the Guantanamo Province.

There, the first 15 shipping container homes in the province were inaugurated last February 1st. The container home design is a modern housing solutions for comfortable living, which were built to replace those whose houses were completely destroyed by Hurricanes Oscar in 2024 and Melisa in 2025.

While expressing his gratitude to the government, the community, and the international organizations that donated the materials, he shows off his new home and says: “I’m satisfied and very grateful. This was promised, and it’s true,”

Oni Nestor lost everything in the Pan de Azúcar neighborhood, when his home was demolished by a landslide in October 2024.
