Specialists, technicians and workers from the Guantanamo Provincial Historical Archive commemorate this July 24, the 30th anniversary of the creation of that entity attached to the Provincial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
The Archive, located on Pedro A. Pérez Street between Donato Mármol and Bernabé Varona Streets, opened its doors on July 24, 1993 and since then has been named after the Guantanamo historian Rafael Emilio Polanco Bidart (1887-1967), a researcher who worked on the development of several books on the History and Geography of Guantanamo.
The development of the activities of the Guantanamo Archive is set on the assessment of the National Archive of the Republic of Cuba, which indicates the safeguarding of documentation that, due to its historical, economic, social and political value, are the most important reserve of the Documentary Memory of the Cuban Nation. They also carry out the scientific-technical processing of funds and collections, as well as provide information about them.
The building of the Historical Archive was built in 1925 as the residence of the Guantanamo Mayor Manuel Salas. Until the first years of the 1960s, and later for many years, the building became the first headquarters of the Union of Pioneers of Cuba, later the José Martí Pioneers Organization in the province.
