Minutes after the National General Staff of the Civil Defense ordered the alert phase due to heavy rains for the eastern provinces, the members of the Provincial Defense Council in Guantanamo met on Thursday night in the surroundings of the Department of Hygiene of Communal Services, in the Central West area, where specialized means arrived to eliminate rubbish dumps that could cause flooding.

Yoel Pérez García, first secretary of the Party in the province, specified the actions are aimed at protecting the population against possible heavy rains.

The also president of the Provincial Defense Council called to monitor to the territory’s reservoirs which now have 52 percent filling capacity, with emphasis on the Faustino Pérez dam and the consequences of the discharge of its waters.

In the community Cecilia, the highest political leader in the province urged its inhabitants not to trust themselves, since the effects of climate change are leading extreme weather events to become more intense.

He also highlighted the rapid and energetic action of the factors, delegated with emphasis on the flood and landslides hazard zones, an action that will be possible with the collaboration of the people, since the priority is to safeguard people’s lives, their belonging and those of the economy.

He also indicated maintaining constant communication to evacuate people in Cecilia when necessary, for which the Guantanamo University is ready.

The tour of the provincial Defense Council included areas at risk of flooding, the Central West Neighborhood and vulnerable areas that, due to their geographical characteristics and limitations require evacuation and special treatment.
