Guantánamo – More than 500 hectares benefit this year from specialized irrigation systems in the Guantánamo Province, said Albernis Veranes Favier, territorial delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The manager reported that in Arroyo Hondo, belonging to the Paraguay Popular Council (demarcation), the first two center pivot irrigation machines are being assembled for irrigation of 28 hectares of land, but as a whole it must benefit 87 hectares with reels and other technologies in the completion phase.
These pieces of equipment cover a distance of 208 meters long and transform the rural landscape of the Lazarita and La Esperanza farms, both belonging to the Paraguay demarcation, where the Grain Enterprise increases the number of areas under efficient irrigation to achieve higher agricultural yield, especially in beans and corn.
Both machines, the only ones of their kind in this eastern province, are equipped with effective technology that can lead to increased yields and less water wasted, through a circular pattern with sprinkler irrigation, with an efficiency ranging between 85 and 90 percent.
Assembled in Cuba with imported components, pivots are capable of applying water, fertilizer, chemicals, and herbicides. This versatility can improve the efficiency compared to other irrigation practices such as flood irrigation.
