Guantánamo.- Guantánamo forestry workers stand out in the country for the preservation of forest heritage, reaching more than 50 percent of the areas covered by forests since 2022, as a result of the sustained compliance with the nursery program, in addition to the proper management of plantations.

This result is due to the work to increase plantations; micro-nurseries specialized in the propagation of native and endangered species, as well as the appropriate silvicultural treatments carried out in the different areas.

This work involves cooperatives, forestry enterprises, the Flora and Fauna Enterprise, the Provincial System of Protected Areas, among other actors which contribute to the care and reforestation, according to a report from the Subdelegation of the Environment in the territory.

The main reforestation area includes the Guantánamo-Guaso and Toa river basins of national interest, in addition to the Baracoa Municipality, in general and the southern coastal strip, priority areas of the State Plan for confronting climate change (Tarea Vida), which implement actions under sustainable management indicators to conserve and increase forests.

Among the measures, the territory stands out for its silvicultural treatment and specialized attention to mangroves on the coasts of Baracoa, Caimanera and within the perimeter of the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park, included in the list of Natural Heritage of Humanity.
