Guantanamo.- Members of the Ministry of the Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba continue today offering rescue and life-saving operations in the municipalities of Imías and San Antonio del Sur, in Guantanamo Province, which are in a state of emergency.

Due to the severe effects caused by Tropical Storm Oscar when passing through that province in eastern Cuba, parts of these areas are still inaccessible and with levels of flooding never before recorded.

The day before, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed the death of six people in San Antonio del Sur, according to preliminary figures.

In light of the damage caused by Oscar in the municipalities of Guantánamo, the Young Communists League (UJC), as well as student organizations and youth movements, launched a call to young people to go to places where contributions are needed to help with recovery, as defined by the authorities of the territories.

We will immediately form the necessary brigades, ready to work under campaign conditions, side by side with our people, the organization assured in a statement.

The municipal committees of the UJC throughout the country are receiving instructions to form the brigades and have them ready to be activated at the time that is decided.

Furthermore, donations will be received for the families that were affected by the meteorological event.

Oscar, which made landfall on the island as a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is moving away from the Cuban coast, downgraded to a tropical storm, but still pouring heavy rains in the next 24 to 48 hours approximately.

The eastern end of the Caribbean nation has historically been affected by 14 tropical cyclones and three of them hit the area in the month of October: Flora (1963), Matthew (2016) and Oscar (2024).
