Guantánamo – Nature protected the different species that are grouped in the Anfiloquio Suárez Zoo, in Baracoa, since the battering of Hurricane Oscar did not cause so much damage, reported Ángel Tavera Sourt, administrator of the center, who pointed out slight damage to the infrastructure of the institution.
The most severe damage was the felling of fruit trees that provided food for the animals. Volunteer groups join the task of revitalizing in the shortest possible time the only institution of its kind in the municipality and the Guantánamo Province.
The Baracoa Zoo’s workers are committed to keep the legacy of Anfiloquio Suárez, a naturalist who created the centre and defended the right of locals to have a place where they could learn about and appreciate the flora and fauna of both the native and foreign regions.
