Guantánamo – The workers of the Maqueisito Pig Reproduction Base Business Unit are working hard to recover this sector, which has been damaged by making very difficult to import food for the animals due to the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba and the insufficient national production of raw materials to make the feed.

Esmil Ortiz Leonard, technical deputy director of the Pig Company in the Guantánamo Province explained that in the Maqueisito unit, with capacity for 1,700 female breading, in the month of May 2024 there were barely 57 impoverished breeders, and with the use of alternative foods such as palm nuts, crop remains, by-products of the food industries, some crops such as cassava, corn and sweet potato, they gradually stop the decrease of breeders and begin to add piglets, until reaching almost a hundred today.

Pig breading is a task that needs time and a lot of work to yield the fruits that the population demands, but a certain upturn is already observed with a reserved number of animals in the state feedlots of Maqueisito, Cecilia, Imías and Maisí, while in the municipality of Baracoa the Breading Center is also recovering.

Esmil Ortiz Leonard emphasizes that efforts are being made to offer more than 20 tons of pork to the population in the second half of December, an insufficient figure for the high demand for this delicious protein, but it should mark the start of the sustainable recovery that is needed.
