The 64th Oral Polio Vaccination campaign in Guantánamo is launched this Monday, in which approximately 16,140 children will be immunized to prevent this disease that primarily affects the pediatric population.

Dr. María Elena Sánchez García, head of the province’s vaccination program, stated that the first phase runs until April 26, with the recovery phase extending from April 28 to May 3.

The second dose is scheduled for June 16-21, with a recovery period from June 24-28.
At that time, the second dose will be administered to those who receive the first dose during these days; meanwhile, children under 9 years of age and older will receive a reactive or booster dose.

The polio vaccine is not administered to children with diarrhea, vomiting, or fever; similarly, children with chronic illnesses must be compensated.

Likewise, they should not eat or drink water 30 minutes before or after receiving the oral vaccine, as chlorine inactivates the antigen’s properties.

The 64th National Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign began this Monday in Guantánamo, as part of the country’s efforts to remain free of the scourge of the fatal disease caused by poliovirus.
