Guantánamo – The first phase of the 64th Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccination Campaign concluded this Saturday in Guantánamo, with approximately 15,000 children under one month old and under three years old vaccinated, representing a 93 percent completion rate.
Groups of children who were not immunized due to illness or other causes will have a week of recovery time, between April 28 and May 3.
Dr. María Elena Sánchez García, head of the provincial Immunization Program, stated that the most important thing is to go to the vaccination centers located in the health areas to receive the immunogen and thus prevent polio, an infectious disease that primarily affects the pediatric population.
She also added that the second phase is scheduled for June 16th to 21st, with recovery from June 24th to 28th. At that time, another dose will be administered to those who receive the first dose during these days. Meanwhile, children under 9 years of age and older will benefit from a reactive or booster dose.
No serious adverse reactions were reported during the polio vaccination in the province. The provincial head of the Immunization Program stated that it is a fairly safe product, and the only contraindication to administering it is if the child has a high fever, diarrhea, or vomiting at the time of receiving the oral drops.
The 64th Oral Bivalent Polio vaccination campaign concluded this Saturday in Guantánamo, benefiting nearly 16,140 children to be vaccinated in the province during the campaign.
