Guantánamo will host the 27th National History Congress in 2026, announced Jorge Luis Aneiros Alonso, president of the Union of Cuban Historians (UNHIC), as he delivered the keynote address at the national ceremony held this Tuesday in the province.

The celebration, held in the central José Martí Park in the capital city, paid tribute to the country’s intellectuals dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Cuba’s historical heritage.

The outstanding historian José Sánchez Guerra was awarded with the Cemí de Gran Tierra, symbol of Cuba’s easternmost territory, given by Yoel Pérez García, First Secretary of the Party in Guantánamo, and Governor Alis Azahares Torreblanca.

More than a dozen UNHIC members in the province were honored with national diplomas: Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, Julio Le Riverend Brusone, Fernando Portuondo Del Prado, Antonio Núñez Jiménez, and Pablo de la Torriente Brau.

Four other researchers also received the Rolando Quintero Mena provincial diploma, while the work of the grassroots sections of the University of Guantánamo, the Historical Archive, Loma del Chivo, the University of Medical Sciences, and the municipalities of Maisí and Baracoa were recognized for their contributions in research work, promotion, and teaching of local history.

Also leading the ceremony were the Vice President of the Union of Historians, Ms. Alfredo Triay Colomé, other members of the National Secretariat, and Ms. Vivian Díaz Bardají, provincial president of UNHIC, who received several distinctions for the organization’s work from several institutions of the province and the country.

Following the event, the Guantanamo members of UNHIC held their provincial assembly, where they analyzed the main actions undertaken from 2023 to May 2025.

The Cuban Historian’s Day is commemorated every July 1st in memory of Dr. Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, who on that date in 1935, 90 years ago, was granted the status of Historian of Havana.
