Guantanamo.- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel visited today the 10 de Octubre thermoelectric power plant in the central province of Camagüey, as part of his ongoing tours to evaluate the recovery program of the National Electric Power System (SEN).
The facility currently operates two units: Unit Five, which contributes 60 megawatts to the SEN, and Unit Six, which provides 95 megawatts. Both units run on domestic crude oil.
According to the Office of the Presidency, the plant’s total generation capacity is limited to 220 megawatts.
Luis Maceira, the plant’s director, explained to the head of state that Unit Five is scheduled for expanded partial maintenance, which will allow it to recover generation capacity.
During his conversation with the workers, Díaz-Canel acknowledged that “people here are working hard and showing tremendous spirit.”
The Presidency emphasized that the inability to acquire spare parts—due to the U.S. blockade against Cuba—has tested the ingenuity and innovative capacity of the plant’s 650 employees. The facility is popularly known as the Nuevitas thermoelectric plant.
