Guantánamo.- Alis Azahares Torreblanca, governor of Guantánamo province, participated this Tuesday in a national checkup with the presence of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and President of the Republic of Cuba.

During the checkup meeting, they evaluated the progress in recovering from the damage caused by recent natural phenomena, such as cyclones, heavy rains, and earthquakes that have affected various provinces in the country.

The highest authority in Cuba’s easternmost territory declared that roof tiles are being delivered to families affected by Tropical Storm Imelda, which damaged more than 20 homes and 21 institutions, including 16 schools and several health centers.

Of the nearly 79 roads damaged in the Guantanamo Province, four are of national interest; two have already been reopened, while complex work continues on the La Farola viaduct. Local solutions are being implemented on 57 mountain roads to restore access to 14 isolated communities.

The hydrometeorological event affected 14 aqueducts, of which 12 were restored; no progress has been made on the remaining ones due to flooding. Electricity service has been practically restored.

Regarding Hurricane Oscar, which damaged more than 5,800 homes in the eastern part of the country in October of last year, Azahares Torreblanca explained that roofing problems persist, with a demand for approximately 20,000 asbestos-cement tiles and 5,000 zinc tiles.

This meeting, reported by the newspaper Granma, aims to ensure that reconstruction strategies are effective and implemented in a timely manner.

Led by Manuel Marrero Cruz, member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, the meeting included governors, lieutenant governors, and ministers, who reported on the response to housing, social institutions, infrastructure, and basic services.
