Guantánamo.- Hurricane Melissa’s passage through eastern Cuba left a paradoxical situation in Guantánamo Province. While reservoirs—which had been almost depleted as drought gripped the region—reached record levels, the drinking water supply system faces challenges in restoring service to thousands of residents.

According to Lexis Suárez Ramírez, provincial director of Water and Sewerage, “the impact of Melissa on the province’s 10 municipalities was beneficial, as we were facing a long-term drought period, and all the reservoirs collected an average of 95 percent of their full capacity.

“La Yaya reservoir, which has fallen to record lows, reached its maximum capacity of 160 million cubic meters and is overflowing. The province’s two main reservoirs, La Yaya and Faustino Pérez, are at 100 and 98 percent capacity, respectively, ” said Suárez Raqmírez
