Guantanamo.- Different generations of Guantánamo residents commemorated the 129th anniversary of the death in combat of Major General Antonio Maceo, Lieutenant of the Liberation Army, and his aide, Pachito Gómez Toro, on December 7th.

From early morning, the province’s main authorities, along with the people, gathered in the park that bears his name in the historic center of Guantánamo, where, in addition to paying tribute to the independence hero, they reaffirmed their loyalty and commitment to the nation.

In a heartfelt tribute, participants in the ceremony commemorated the figure of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, faithful continuer of the liberation struggles in Cuba and the ideals of Maceo and Martí.

Young people, pre-university students, students from the Camilo Cienfuegos Military School, and students from the Universities of Guantánamo and Medical Sciences, marched once again in homage to our heroes.

The procession, with its symbolic military march and the beat of drums, reached its final destination at the San Rafael Municipal Cemetery, the final resting place of 71 Guantánamo combatants who gave their lives in Angola and other African countries, where they contributed to the dismantling of apartheid.

This December 7th, which also marks the 36th anniversary of Operation Tribute, family members, veterans, representatives of various mass organizations, and Pioneers laid flowers at the pantheon erected in honor of these heroes.
