Guantanamo.- On May 18th, the world commemorates International Museum Day, a global observance honoring museums for their fundamental role as custodians of memory and identity. This day offers an ideal opportunity not only to visit local museums but also to deepen our understanding of these nonprofit organizations that safeguard humanity’s cultural heritage.
The theme for International Museum Day 2026 is “Museums, Uniting a Divided World,” underscoring the vital role museums play as spaces of encounter, dialogue, and understanding within societies marked by cultural, social, and geopolitical divisions. This year’s event highlights museums’ unique capacity to connect communities, foster inclusion, and promote respect for diversity.
Beyond preserving heritage, museums serve as centers of learning and reflection that contribute to building more peaceful and inclusive societies. They provide exhibitions and displays that educate and engage visitors about the culture, art, and history of diverse regions worldwide. Additionally, museums conduct research and conservation efforts to protect both the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity.
In today’s increasingly globalized world, where cultures are influenced by customs and traditions from across the globe, the knowledge shared by museums is invaluable. It enhances our understanding of national identities and fosters appreciation for the identities of other countries.
In Guantánamo alone, thirteen museums actively engage in outreach activities to bring historical, documentary, natural, and archaeological treasures closer to the public. These institutions exemplify a strong commitment to safeguarding local memory, which is essential for understanding the past and defending national identity.
The initiative to celebrate International Museum Day on May 18 was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977, reinforcing the enduring importance of museums worldwide.
On this International Museum Day, let us acknowledge and support the indispensable work of museums as guardians of our collective memory and promoters of unity in a divided world.
