A new “Skin to Skin” service for the care of low-weight neonates opened its doors this Friday at the Dr. Agostino Neto General Hospital, in Guantanamo, as the result of international solidarity and the will of governments in favor of better mother and child’s health.

Dr.Luis Alberto Ramírez Díaz, director of the institution, highlights that the room is comfortable with capacity for six beds equipped with accessories that facilitate the mother’s handling of her baby and qualified personnel who will remain 24 hours a day to supervise the evolution and development of the baby.

Dr. Yanny Hamud Poyeaux, Training Specialist in neonatal hemodynamics and comprehensive management of the newborn, said that this service is aimed at monitoring the continuous improvement of the and well-being of those newborns who must reach two thousand 600 grams of weight for their discharge and with the consent of the service specialists and the family doctor and nurse.

Likewise, the service promotes the promotion of breastfeeding and care focused on the development of those children under 28 days old, while avoiding overcrowding in the closed neonatology service, since these children have a prolonged stay. They have surpassed their initial morbidity process, mostly preterm, underweight, ventilated, and only require nutritional recovery to be discharged.

In conjunction with the opening of the “Skin-to-Skin” room for the care of underweight newborns, in the largest hospital institution in Guantanamo, other investments are implemented in the new neonatology room, in the emergency room and the water plant for treatment to patients receiving hemodialysis, actions planned to conclude in January of the next year.
