After long research work and journeys through forests, mountains, rivers and streams of Baracoa for more than a decade, the prestigious botanist and archaeologist Noel Coutín Lobaina presented, at the Cine-Teatro Encanto of the First Cuban Village, his book entitled Inventario de las orquídeas del Parque Nacional Alejandro de Humboldt (PNAH) (Inventory of the Orchids of the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park).
This unique work collects valuable information on 80 species of orchidaceae in the PNAH, a site declared Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001 , as the result of the joint work of the publishers La Mezquita (National Association of Cuban Historians, Holguín), Selvi (Valencia, Spain) and Nuevos Mundos (The Saint Augustine – Baracoa Friendship Association).
The new book is composed of 71 pages, which include a photographic material to facilitate the correct identification of orchids and provides wide-ranging tools for the ones who love plants and natural atmosphere to carry out activities related to tourism.
In the Prologue, the MsC. José Luis Gómez Hechavarría, researcher at the Holguín Botanical Garden, described the inventory as a valuable contribution to knowledge about the diversity of these monocotyledonous plants in the most important protected area of Cuba.
