Around three hundred patients are treated monthly at the House for diabetic patients in the city of Guantanamo, whose objective is to ensure that new patients learn to live with the disease through nutritional education and medication, according to the doctor´s advice.
Bachelor Mayelín Carbonel Ferrera said that, in addition to daytime admissions for debuting and decompensated patients, the center has an outpatient consultation area, with podiatry, endocrine, psychology, dermatology, nutrition and application of heberprot-P services.
She also said that those admitted during the day receive breakfast, snack and lunch, in addition to the dynamics with the family members who come to the institution such as diabetes education to know everything they should do in relation to diet, physical exercises and drugs, oral and injectable.
Humberto Hodelín Carballo, psychologist at the institution, said that physical exercises are carried out once a week in the center itself, while guidance is provided on how to do them at home.
Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide and, according to data provided by specialists, it is estimated that between 12 and 14 percent of the Cuban population suffers from diabetes.
