The Governor of Guantanamo, Alis Azahares Torreblanca, gave an account on her management to the Provincial Government Council, in a genuine exercise of transparency and democracy.
The first woman elected to this position in this eastern Cuban territory, reported on the economic situation and the main indicators such as commercial circulation, sales and the budget, as well as attention to the proposals and complaints of the population, the result of
the policies and programs, and the implementation of the Development Strategy until 2030, in which the application of science, innovation and technological transfer projects has a direct impact on its materialization.
Present were the First Secretary of the Communist Party in Guantanamo, Yoel Pérez García, the Minister of the Food Industry, Manuel Santiago Sobrino, and Yunexis Mojena Marrero, official of the Office of Attention to Local Bodies of the People´s Power;
in addition to deputies to the Cuban Parliament for the territory, provincial directors and representatives of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior as well as political and mass organizations.
Problems that persist in the territory and constitute work priorities for the coming year were critically addressed, such as: economic recovery, food production and marketing, investment programs, construction materials, housing and Mother and Child Program (
PAMI), internal control, the improvement of trade and the financial situation of several local subordination companies and the proposals and complaints of the population.
As provided by the Governor’s constitutional exercise of accountability, a temporary commission was created, made up of members of the Provincial Council, which in their opinion recommended: monitoring compliance with the territory´s main economic indicators, with emphasis on food production and
physical productions, increase results in programs such as maternal and child care, as well as achieve a greater relationship between provincial managers and municipalities, serve vulnerable communities in a differentiated manner, and a greater link with the delegates of People´s Power and the population.
The highest government body – which includes the Governor, the Vice Governor, the Presidents and Vice Presidents of the Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power and the mayors at the same level – recognized the leadership work of Alis Azahares, in a year of great economic contraction, and marked by the intensification of the North American blockade of Cuba.
