Salvador Valdés Mesa, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and Vice President of the Republic, exchanged with the highest authorities of the Guantánamo Province, on the progress of the food sovereignty program, aimed at enhancing and diversifying supplies to the population.

Valdés Mesa reflected on the need to take extreme control of the land and its efficient use in the province, to increase production, especially livestock production, which today must have the delivery of milk to groceries and the State as a priority.

The delegate of agriculture Albernis Veranes reported that they have achieved greater marketing of local productions in the markets and fairs in the town, in addition the cold sowing is carried out and there is growth in 1,200 hectares compared to the previous year, with the number of idle lands.

However, he acknowledged, the contracting of grains is a pending task, because although it was possible to agree on all the corn, the beans are still far from satisfying the demands of the province, which consumes 2,711 tons per year and in the municipality Guantánamo, for example, only produces about 200 tons.

Valdés Mesa insisted on the urgency of achieving greater agricultural prominence for the municipalities, an essential contribution to local and national food sovereignty.

“We have the land, the water, the families… we have to redouble our collective will, the State, independent producers, and the territorial scientific institutions to promote this important government program aimed at the food security for Cubans.”
