The three games of the last day of July 26th softball tournament for veteran players, played at the Vitilla field, were close, as rarely before.
So much so that the players from Telecommunications Company of Cuba (Etecsa) had to pull out the extra to beat the players from Special Protection Services Company (Sepsa) 9 runs to 8, with Carlos Lago winning and Abel Jones failing. The winners’ offense was led by Arabel Vera, 2-2, and Alexis Muñoz, with 2 hits in three home appearances. Luis Favier hit 3-2 for the losers.
In the middle game, Jamaiquinos defeated Vitilla 9-6, with Jorge Luis Merencio covering all 7 innings in the box for the English-speaking team and the loss of Israel Barrientos.
Juan Antonio Reve, 4-3, was the best hitter for the winners, seconded by Ricardo Valiente, 4-2, including a home run out of the field. Julio Fonseca and Gerardo Reyes had two hits in three at-bats for the overmatched team.
The National Poultry Union (CAN), meanwhile, opened the day with a smile against Guerreros 8 – 7, with credit to right-hander Jorge Gomez and Manuel Calderin’s setback.
This game was decided by Gomez himself with an inside-the-park home run, with which he left his opponents on the field. For CAN, Jorge Merencio (Chino) hit 4-3 and Jose Vera homered.
Next Sunday, CAN-Sepsa, Etecsa-Vitilla and Guerreros-Jamaiquinos will face each other, in that order.
