Guantanmo.-Venceremos Weekly reporter Mayliovis del Toro and student Sandra Bory won first place in the written press category of the Marcos Antonio Charon 2024 Provincial Journalism Contest, awarded by the Guantanamo Delegation of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) with their report entitled “Odisea en la terminal”.
In this category was also awarded the second prize to journalist Jose Llamos Camejo, correspondent of Granma Newspaper, for his series of works about the cocoa industry in Baracoa; while the third place was won by Dairon Martinez Tejeda and student Daniel Esquijarosa, representing Venceremos Weekly, for their report “Open wounds of culture”; and from this same media institution, the jury awarded a mention to Mayliovis del Toro.

In the radio journalism category, Mabel Pozo Ramirez, journalist of CMKS Provincial Radio Station, won the first place for her informative program “Cerrando el cerco” (Closing the fence); and the second prize went to Martha Reyes Noa and Dianelbis Delfino, also professionals of this radio station, for their report “A río revuelto ganancia del pescador” (On a troubled river, the fisherman’s gain); while the third place went to Yoanna Duporte Guilarte.
On the other hand, in the category of hypermedia journalism, the prize was won by the Digital Newsroom of Telecentro Solvisión, with the informative coverage “Todo Guantánamo en Primero de Mayo”, and in the category of Audiovisual Journalism, also from this institution, first place went to Yisel Roman Arcia for the series “Asuntos pendientes” (Unfinished Business); the second prize went to Uris Salvat Mariño for hisb interview with architect Zulma Ojeda; while the third prize went to Miguel Reyes Mendoza, with the documentary “Lo mejor que me ha pasado”, and the jury gave a mention to Isaac Garcia Cardenas for the report “Parques infantiles con materias primas”.
The weekly Venceremos this 2024 swept the awards in the graphic journalism category of the Marcos Antonio Charon Provincial Contest, in which professionals Jorge Luis Lambert Nolazco, Yanela Masso de la Cruz and Julio E. Reyna Diaz won the first, second and third prizes, respectively, in this section of the contest.
Likewise, this time UPEC conceived a category to award the works of journalism students, in which the students of this major of Oriente University were honored: Sandra Bory, with the first prize, second Elouis Marín, third Jocelyn Sayu and Maria Gretel Raymon, as well as a special mention for Special Mention: Angel E. Ramirez and two mentions to Milena Estevez and Merlis Loraine Calunga.
The awards ceremony of the Provincial Journalism Contest Marcos Antonio Charon 2024 took place at the headquarters of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and was a moment of remembrance and tribute to the teacher and reference of this professional guild in the territory and the country, Pabloo Soroa Fernandez, recently deceased, as well as a space to recognize Maricel Broacat Ordoñez, who served for 16 years as economist of the Guantanamo Press House.
