Guantanamo.- The dry season in our country extends from January to May, so the Forest Fire Prevention Campaign has begun as planned, given the significant impact of natural disasters and their devastating consequences.
According to Vindemay Delgado Nápoles, Chief of the Forest Ranger Corps in the municipality of Niceto Pérez, precautionary measures are being intensified in the relevant areas, such as Sierra Canasta and Casimba de Filipinas, to prevent wild fire.
The specialist indicated that this forest fire prevention campaign aims to raise awareness among the population about the danger that fires pose, especially in mountainous areas.
The program of actions includes educational talks, neighborhood discussions, the construction of firebreaks, practical exercises, and communication workshops, targeting all sectors of society, but primarily farmers and rural communities.
The top representative of the Forestry Corps in the Niceto Perez territory explained that 95% of wildfires result from the burning of debris, equipment use and malfunctions, negligently discarded cigarettes, and intentional acts of person who sets fires in fire-prone areas, and the effects of climate change that are damaging forested areas.
Vindemay Delgado Nápoles, Chief of the Forestry Corps, emphasized the need to prevent these devastating forest fires, as they cause millions of dollars in economic losses, affect biological and floral biodiversity, air quality, and create significant stress for families living in the mountains.
This was clearly demonstrated by the large-scale fire that occurred in the mountain community of Ojo de Agua in July 2025, which mobilized the entire force and equipment of the Guantánamo province in the Eastern Region.
