Cuba and the Basque Country are currently promoting agricultural projects to increase food production through the use of agroecological techniques that empower women in Guantanamo, said an expert on the subject.

According to the information offered exclusively to Prensa Latina by the Doctor in Agricultural Sciences, Karen Alvarado, two projects of this type are being developed by the Euskadi-Cuba Solidarity Association and the Cuban Association of Agricultural and Forestry Technicians (ACTAF), in the municipalities of Baracoa and Manuel Tames.

The cooperation between the parties enables women´s empowerment in the fruit tree program to face climate change in fragile ecosystems in the municipality of Baracoa, Alvarado said.

Also the association between ACTAF and the Spanish autonomous community promotes support for food production and reforestation in Manuel Tames, which – in both cases – benefits agricultural production units and local companies.

The expert, who co-directs the projects on the Cuban side, said that in Baracoa they trained 131 women, 271 men and 27 managers in agroecological management techniques for fruit trees, food hygiene, marketing, economics and agrarian legislation.

The better use of the soil through the crops intercropping, the use of organic matter, green fertilizers, biofertilizers and the use of biological means to combat pests, stand out among the agroecological techniques used.

In Manuel Tames twenty jobs for rural women were increased, created nurseries for the cultivation of moringa, mulberry, tithonia, tamarind and cedar, among other benefits.
