Through research projects and scientific-technical services offered in 2022, the Alejandro de Humboldt Budgeted Unit of Environmental Services (UPSA) contributes to the preservation of the protected areas of the Guantánamo Province, in accordance with the demands of sustainable development and resilience in the face of climate change.

In this scientific work, the Cuencas Verdes project stands out, which through efficient management plans for natural resources, achieves the recovery of soils affected by erosive processes, in addition to improving water quality for the inhabitants of the settlements near the sub-basin of the Jaguani River.

Likewise, the center updated the biological inventory of orchids existing in the Nipe Sagua Baracoa mountain massif with the preliminary accounting of 51 species and an apiary was created in areas of the Hatibonico Ecological Reserve to diversify the ecological productions of honey, propolis, jelly, pollen and queen bees.

The Alejandro de Humboldt Environmental Services Budgeted Unit of Guantanamo also promotes adaptation actions to the effects of climate change such as the implementation of agroecological techniques, which reduces dependence on chemical inputs, in favor of sustainable agriculture.
