At the close of this information, the Provincial Meteorological Center of Guantanamo reports the permanence of a frontal trough that increases the occurrence of strong and intense rains for the rest of the day and for this Saturday, which may be intense in various areas of the territory.
Given the complex meteorological scenario, the Provincial Defense Council (CDP) and its counterparts in the ten Guantanamo municipalities are activated, in compliance with what is established by the civil defense measures for this phase, with the primary objective of preserving human lives and the assets and resources of the State.
Cuba’s Civil Defense authority issued a Watch for Intense Rains in the eastern provinces of Las Tunas, Holguin, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo, the weather even could lead to a tropical depression, which suggested the establishment of an alert stage at 18 hours Thursday, local Cuba time.
After concluding the Baraguá 2023 Strategic Exercise in the province, the highest authorities of the CDP verified the measures that are adopted by the different subgroups that make up this command and management body, as well as in the municipalities to confront and alleviate the damage that may be caused by the continuous rainfall present throughout the Guantanamo territory.
At the meeting, it was reported that so far the most significant rains are recorded in the municipalities Guantánamo with 105.4 millimeters, Yateras 83.7, Caimanera 75.2mm and El Salvador 67.2, provincial average of 54.6mm.
The Faustino Pérez dam, the main reservoir that supplies drinking water to the city, is maintained, receiving about a thousand cubic meters per second and discharges the same amount.
There is permanent monitoring of the state of the dams and the main water reservoirs of the territory, the control of the same and its supply to the population, with the supply by tank truck to settlements, neighborhoods and communities with damage to their aqueducts and the water distribution networks.
In the meeting it was also reported electrical damage that occurred in mountainous towns such as Limonar, in the municipality El Salvador, La Tontina, in Maisí, El Naranjo, in San Antonio del Sur and towns in Baracoa. It was also learned that brigades of linemen are ready to deal with any eventuality, to which three other brigades from sister provinces of the country will join.
The protection of 694 people was achieved, 681 of them in safe homes of families and friends and 13 in evacuation centers in the Caimanera municipality.
A priority task is the cleaning of drains and unclogging of sewers, the collection and possible quick sale of agricultural products, monitoring the distribution of the basic basket, the availability of fuel and its exclusive use in the vitality of the municipalities.
Six medical brigades were activated, as well as others and those specialized in transportation, communications, construction and industry, to deal with any eventuality.
Prior to the meeting of the Provincial Defense Council, the highest authorities of Guantánamo checked the measures to face the effects of the rains in the municipality Caimanera and toured areas of the marine town, with floods that already affect more than 40 homes.
