Guantánamo – As part of the actions taken in response to the Early Warning declared in the province due to the approaching meteorological phenomenon Melissa, authorities in Guantánamo municipality are intensifying measures to protect the population.

The vice president of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power, Rider Enrique Mastrapa Laborit, visited the People’s Council representing the Sur Hospital area, where he activated the defense groups and evaluated the evacuation strategies planned to preserve human lives.

Among the decisions adopted, Mastrapa Laborit tackled the evacuation of pregnant women in their final trimester to the Loma de la Piña Elderly Care Home, as well as the transfer of those about to give birth to the Guantánamo General Hospital, in order to guarantee safe medical care in the face of the possible effects of the meteorological event.

Likewise, in compliance with the actions planned in anticipation of Tropical Storm Melissa, Mastrapa Laborit traveled to the Centro Oeste People’s Council to evaluate and activate the civil defense groups responsible for responding to the meteorological event in that area.

During the meeting with local officials, the participants organized evacuation measures to protect the most vulnerable population.

Local authorities also conducted a house-to-house assessment to identify people requiring priority attention and ensure their transfer to safe locations before the rains and winds associated with the phenomenon intensify.

These preparations are part of the preventive actions being carried out throughout the province, where the top authorities urged citizens to maintain discipline, conserve drinking water, and strictly follow the instructions of the Civil Defense.
