Guantanamo.- The Yateritas Microjet Basic Business Unit, the province’s main banana-growing center, continues its recovery from the severe damage caused by Hurricane Melissa last October.
Melissa’s damage was greater than Oscar’s, as the former destroyed a larger number of plantations, including all the bunches, even those still growing. It also flooded the area and wiped out bean and tomato crops.
The extent of the damage, the limited resources available, the power outages and fuel shortages, plus the persistent flooding, have meant that the microjet’s production recovery has not progressed as initially planned.
The low production has so far prevented the workers from attending the Guantánamo agricultural fair, although a significant increase in the harvest is expected next July.
