Guantanamo.- Buffalo farming maintained its upward trend last year in the province, with both the number of farms and buffalo population increasing.

According to reports from Jorge Luis Mendoza Viñales, Deputy Delegate for the Animal Kingdom at the Territorial Delegation of Agriculture, six new farms were set up in 2025: four in the municipality of Niceto Pérez and one each, in Manuel Tames and San Antonio del Sur.

The number of buffalo increased by 205 compared to the previous year, now totaling 1,781. As part of the ongoing development program for this livestock sector, in which the province is committed to due to its advantages, plans are underway to expand this year with five new farms: three in Niceto Pérez and one each in Manuel Tames and Maisí.

Maisí will be the first farm to have one in this far eastern municipality. When Maisí joins the buffalo breeding program, all municipalities will have at least one unit, except for Imías and Caimanera, where its development is not possible, primarily due to water scarcity.

Jorge Luis reported that the province currently has 19 units for buffalo breeding: two each in Manuel Tames, Baracoa, and El Salvador; one each in Yateras, San Antonio del Sur, and Guantánamo; and 10 in Niceto Pérez, the main area for the species’ breeding management
