Guantanamo.- The world’s population aging is a reality that is not avoided on Caimanera Municipality, a region that is experiencing an increase in the number and proportion of older people, hence the priority of the health system is the promotion of health and well-being in old age, and the protection of a favorable and supportive environment for these people.
Maricé Viquillón González, head of the Multidisciplinary Team for Gerontological Care in the municipality explained to Radio Bahía that the team based in the 13 de Abril Elderly’s Home at the sea village is aimed at the protection of older adults and the team covers all levels of the health service, since it begins with the periodic examination by the local doctor and nurse, to evaluate physical fragility and material needs.
The operation of grandparents’ clubs, the orientation and recreation groups, the Family Care System, consultations with other specialties, economic and technical aid, delivery of supplies and hospitalization in institutions in cases where elderly required, are the main services provided by the program in the municipality.
The program also serves the 30 senior citizens who are currently taken in the elderlys’ home, where they are safe in a supportive environment.
The aging of the population is one of the most significant social transformations of the 21st century, with consequences for almost all sectors of society, which is why the Senior Citizen Program in Caimanera is focused on the health and well-being of its age group.
