Towards the goal of participating in the first-category competition to be held in Cuba in May, Caimanera sailors are intensifying their training in sailing techniques, focusing especially on upwind and stern maneuvers.

This effort seeks not only to improve their technical skills but also to prepare the athletes to face the challenges this important competition will present.

Yamilé Loo Leyva, a teacher at the Alfredo Street North Sports Complex and a coach of this sport at the nautical annex of the Rafael Freyre Sports Iniciation School, in Guantánamo Province, explained that the training sessions, which take place in the waters of Guantánamo Bay (on the Caimanera coast), include practical and theoretical sessions.

“We designed a rigorous program that ranges from familiarizing ourselves with the different wind conditions to optimizing speed and control during races. The stern and bow stroke are fundamental techniques for maximizing performance in competition, and it is crucial that our young sailors feel comfortable and confident executing them,” said Loo Leyva.

In addition to training, local regattas are organized as part of the preparation process. These competitions allow young people to put what they have learned into practice and face real-life racing situations, which contributes to their confidence and skill on the water. Coaches observe and analyze each performance to provide constructive feedback and help athletes continually improve.

“The participants, ranging from beginners to more experienced sailors, show great enthusiasm and dedication. The training sessions focus not only on technique but also on teamwork and race strategy, key elements for success in any competition,” said Vladimir Charón Lao, director of the Northern Sports Complex.

“Additionally, entry regulations are developed with a group of local boys and girls who are interested in sailing,” explained the national sailing referee.

Sailing continues to be the sport that contributes the most athletes from Caimanera to the national team. There is a great deal of expectation among Coaches and athletes so as the first category competition approaches. The team is committed to giving its best and to do so, they are very clear about developing technical and tactical skills, as well as strengthening the competitive spirit.
