The Center for Technological Applications for Sustainable Development (Catedes), in Guantanamo, the only one of its kind in the country, stands out last year for obtaining two awards from the Cuban Academy of Sciences, based on research work they have carried out since 2019.

The awards are the result of the new estimates of the Seismic Hazards, Vulnerabilities and Risks (PVR) in the study of the south-eastern region of the country, and the bioprospecting of members of the class actinobacteria and the genus bacilli in aquatic environments of Santiago de Cuba, in search of antibacterial and antifungal potential.

This was recognized by Zadierick Hernández, deputy scientific and technical director of that center, who also highlights the results in the production of pest control product obtained from the Neem Tree such as oil, considered a powerful insecticide for treating and controlling infestations and plagues in onion, tomato and other short-cycle crops.

Likewise, the specialists of this group offered state-commissioned and scientific-technical services such as monitoring the beaches of San Antonio del Sur, Maisí and Imías and some 16 disaster risk studies for the formation of plans for the reduction of these threats in various entities.

In 2024, the Catedes Center for Technological Applications for Sustainable Development, of Guantanamo, is committed to continuing the work on training in industrial property and the certifications of its products made from the Neem Tree, the monitoring of marine areas and the southern coastal strip, in addition to projects in favor of local development.
