The traditional Sábado del Libro launched three publishing proposals in line with the Havana Film Festival.

In keeping with the 44th edition of the event, which opened on Friday, Ediciones Icaic (Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry) and the Cuban Book Institute took over the Calle de Madera, in front of the Plaza de Armas in Old Havana, at 11:00 a.m. local time, for their presentations.

“Vivir bajo la lluvia” (Living under rain) by filmmaker Julio Garcia Espinosa, “El cine latinoamericano del desencanto” by journalist, film critic and writer Justo Planas and “Una vuelta de tuerca. Cine de autpelículas de culto” by writer and critic Alberto Garrandés were the proposals of three Cuban writers who defend Cuba’s cinema.

The launchings was accompanied by comments by Carlos Galiano, film critic, screenwriter; Víctor Fowler, writer, essayist and poet; as well as Manuel Herrera, National Film Award (2022).

Essayist, critic and film promoter Juan Antonio Borrero, on the other hand, said: “… Justo Planas’ book is favoring the construction of that History of Latin American cinema that is still waiting for a vision where the overall view (which barely seems to have been tested with the political cinema promoted in the 60´s) helps us connect the specific texts with the historical conditions that in each case have continued to stimulate the recording of the harsh reality that inspires it”.
