More than 160 family doctor offices have been properly maintained and repaired in Guantanamo since the start last year of improving the Family Doctor and Nurse Program in the country, which also involves management, teaching, medical care and communication components.
Yulexis Carmenaty de la Cruz, head of the Primary Health Care section in the province, told the Venceremos newspaper that in 2022, 118 buildings were repaired and at the end of the first semester of 2023, 48 were completed, most of which were previously reported to be in bad condition, of 83 planned for the year.
Of those concluded in this period, 23 Family Doctor (CMF) offices are located in areas of the Turquino Plan, which covers a large part of Guantanamo territory, and 18 in communities identified as vulnerable, which together with rural areas are priorities established in the Program policy.
Carmenaty de la Cruz explained that the investments are mainly dedicated to the waterproofing of roofs and the change of carpentry, and to other actions such as replacement of hydraulic networks and lighting, repair of perimeter fences and painting.
Carmenaty de la Cruz said that as part of the improvement of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, they have a coverage of one hundred percent of the family’s doctors and nurses is maintained, and the Basic Work Groups (GBT) were completed with specialists in comprehensive general medicine certified in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Gynecology.
Management diploma for GBT heads is carried out, basic and provincial-level scientific conferences are held regularly, and the update of the Program, approved in May, is implemented with modifications to better work conditions and attention to groups according to risk, she said.
The head of Primary Health Care added that among the actions with the greatest impact, between this year and next, it is expected to rearrange services and add new premises so that each office has a maximum of one thousand patients, and increase the GBT so that they serve only a dozen CMFs.
She finally said that since the creation of the family medicine model in January 1984 -turned into the Family Doctor and Nurse Program- there are 582 clinics in Guantanamo, 269 of them in mountainous areas and those with difficult access to the Turquino Plan.
