A wreath on behalf of the Cuban people was laid today in front of the funeral monument erected to Carlos Manuel de Cespedes in the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, in this eastern city, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his fall in combat.

The ceremony was presided over by Salvador Valdes Mesa, member of the Political Bureau and vice president of the Republic, Rogelio Polanco, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) and head of its ideological department, Beatriz Johnson, first secretary of the political organization in the province, Major General Ricardo Rigel Tejera, head of the Eastern Army, Alpidio Alonso, Minister of Culture, and Manuel Falcon, acting governor.

Eduardo Torres Cueva, director of the Office of the Martiano Program and president of the Cuban Academy of History, recalled the events of February 27, 1874, and affirmed that Cespedes always thought of all the facets that would continue the Revolution.

According to him, the hero was above all a conspirator, who continuously prepared the uprising movement together with his colleagues from Manzanillo and Bayamo.

The Mambi dreamed, thought and created the Cuba that has been a constant growth of the homeland, and, in addition, grew from a very young age the manifestations of culture, he said.

According to the historian, the hero broke, in a definitive way, with slavery and all kinds of discrimination, and achieved a true Revolution in which the Caribbean nation was forged.

Father of Homeland shines today throughout the country, because he knew how to sow the seed that continues to grow and constitutes the robust tree of the Cuban Revolution, he asserted.

The necropolis was also attended by leaders of the PCC and the Government in the territory, representatives of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior, social and mass organizations, combatants and a representation of the people of Santiago de Cuba.

Likewise, in San Lorenzo, Third Front, the place where the Bayames patriot fell in unequal combat against Spanish soldiers on February 27, 1874, homage will be paid to him.
