Guantanamo.- Cuban Culture Week officially began in Guantánamo with the “Saturday Book” event, held at its customary venue in José Martí Park. Hosted by writer Yess Ramírez, the gathering featured researcher José Sánchez Guerra, who presented “Historia de una gesta libertadora 1952–1958” (History of a Liberation Struggle, 1952–1958), by author Georgina Leyva Pagán.

Published under the Ciencias Sociales imprint of the Nuevo Milenio Publishing House, the book includes a foreword by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz. It is structured in eleven chapters, beginning with an overview of Guantánamo. In its pages, Leyva Pagán also recounts personal experiences shared with her life partner, Commander Julio Camacho Aguilera.

As part of the week’s program, the exhibition Abolición, Independencia e Historia (Abolition, Independence, and History) opened on October 10 at the Guantánamo Provincial Museum. The exhibition is sponsored by the local Heritage Center.

To commemorate the 158th anniversary of the beginning of Cuba’s independence struggles, José Martí Park also hosted a special edition of Bajo la Ceiba (Under the Ceiba Tree). Organized by the Babul Folkloric Ballet, the event included guest performances by several local dance companies and artistic projects.

The opening gala of Cuban Culture Week in Guantánamo will be held in the courtyard of the Provincial Museum at 7:00 p.m. Entitled Arte soy entre las Artes (I Am Art Among the Arts), the event is directed by Lázaro McPherson William and will feature local artists.
