Guantanamo.- Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic of Cuba, is leading a visit for several municipalities in the province of Guantánamo to assess the damage and the progress of recovery following the rains associated with Tropical Storm Imelda, which recently hit the eastern territory.

Accompanied by Manuel Marrero Cruz and Inés María Chapman Waugh, Cuban Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, respectively, and the highest political and governmental authorities in Guantanamo, the President visited the towns of Hatibonico, in the municipality of Caimanera, and Ullao, in Niceto Pérez, where intense rains caused flooding that cut off several settlements.

In the settlement of Hatibonico, an ecological reserve site, 657 millimeters of rain were recorded in 72 hours, and in Ullao, where 1,187 residents mostly live in multi-family buildings, 597 millimeters of rain were recorded in 72 hours, which caused roof leaks and the Río Seco overflowed its banks inundating nearby homes.

Rogelio Castillo Martínez, president of the Ullao People’s Council, explained that work is underway to restore, clean, and sanitize the town, located about 25 kilometers southwest of Guantánamo City and close to the border with the illegal U.S. naval base in Guantánamo Bay.
