Guantánamo.- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel began his official visit to Russia on Monday, by laying a wreath at the monument to the Motherland at the Piskariovksoye Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg.

According to Prensa Latina, the Cuban head of State started his activities honoring the defenders of the city of Leningrad (today St. Petersburg) at the monument complex, accompanied by Evgeny Grigoriev, chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, Diaz-Canel and Alexander Beglov, Governor of Saint Petersburg, held official talks to discuss the prospects for bilateral cooperation in economy, culture, education, and other areas.

During the day, the Cuban president will also visit scientific, biotechnological, and artificial intelligence development centers in the capital of northern Russia.

In the second stage of his official visit to this nation, the Cuban leader will travel to Moscow where he will take part in the commemorative acts and parade at the Red Square for the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany.

He will also participate in the celebrations organized on the 65th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba.
