Researchers from the Cienfuegos Center for Environmental Studies (CEAC) are currently attending the Regional Training Course on Microplastics Monitoring in Marine Ecosystems through Analytical Techniques, in Brazil.
The scientific event is sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Ariana Garcia Chamero and Anamarys Albuerne Perez are participating in the scientific activity that is being developed within the framework of the regional project ‘Capacity building in marine and coastal environments using nuclear and isotopic techniques – RLA7025’.
As part of the scientific program, lectures on microplastics as pollutants in the marine environment; their sources, distribution and fate in coastal ecosystems are given.
In addition, attendees wil have the nopportunity to pay visits to labs and microplastic sampling centers in Niteroi.
In 2022, CEAC researchers identified, collected and studied the presence of microplastics in beach sands of Rancho Luna, Tetas de Tomasa, and two beaches in Cayo Santa Maria, in the central zone of Cuba; where samples have been analyzed and showed evidence of plastic particles, with a variety of shapes, sizes and chemical compositions.
