Guantanamo.- Salvador Valdés Mesa, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba and Vice President of the Republic, evaluated in Guantanamo the progress of the emergency plans for the recovery of the more than 13 thousand hectares of agricultural land affected by Hurricane Oscar and the progress of the cold planting season.
He learned that among the permanent crops the heavier damage centered in the banana, coffee and cocoa plantations, with more than three thousand hectares damaged in each case. The coconut also suffered hard blows from the strong winds in the Baracoa area, however, the existence of local nurseries to quickly replace the necessary plants is a potential.
Valdés Mesa, who was accompanied by Yoel Pérez García, first secretary of the Party in the province and Alis Azahares Torresblanca, Governor, indicated that the planting of root, vegetables and short-cycle grains should be promoted, in addition to taking advantage, in those areas less affected by Oscar, to increase the quantity and variety of crops that allow increasing the volume of food.
The promotion of aquaculture as a food alternative should also be a priority, with emphasis on San Antonio del Sur and El Salvador, which showed significant potential in the season.
When evaluating the sugar harvest, the Cuban Vice President insisted on changing the concept of management and administration in the sector, as well as the need to diversify the fruits of productive forms to achieve family self-sufficiency and food sovereignty of the territories.
He also learned that progress is being made in the recovery of the railway, and of the mills and boiler of the sugar mill, as well as in the agricultural machinery essential for the stability of the contest scheduled to begin in mid-December.
In the exchange with the highest authorities of Guantánamo and executives of the agro-industrial sector, Valdés Mesa also reviewed the preparation, organization and logistics for the activities of the end of the year and the coming of 2025.
