Guantanamo.- The National General Staff of Cuba’s Civil Defense issued an early warning alert for heavy rains in the coming hours associated with the formation a large low-pressure area, according to a special notice issued by the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) on Friday afternoon, there is a trough over the Atlantic Ocean that is extending to the vicinity of the Lesser Antilles and the seas north of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with strong nuclei with showers, rains and thunderstorms, approaching the eastern end of Cuba.
This situation, together with the instability generated by the wide area of low pressure, located in the southern Caribbean Sea, will increase the clouds with showers, rains and thunderstorms starting this Saturday in the provinces of the eastern region.
Taking into account the above and the future evolution of the hydrometeorological conditions, it was decided to establish the Information Phase for heavy rains starting at 10:00 hours today, for the provinces of Guantánamo, Santiago de Cuba, Holguín, Granma, and Las Tunas. The rest of the provinces and the Special Municipality of the Isla de la Juventud must be attentive to the development of this hydrometeorological situation.
The Civil Defense called on the governing bodies to be alert and comply with the measures established in the Country Procedure for Response and Recovery to Tropical Cyclones and other extreme weather events, as well as to take into account the experiences of recent weather events, paying special attention to communities located in areas at risk of flooding.
The institution also called on the people to stay informed through the media, official social network profiles and to comply with the instructions given by local authorities in a disciplined manner. The Civil Defense, the Meteorology and Hydraulic Resources institutes maintain observation on the existing meteorological situation, the source added.
