Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, recalled today the 121st anniversary of the signing of the agreement that allowed the illegal establishment of the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo.
On X, the head of state recalled the words of Army General Raul Castro, who defined the action as a dagger stuck in the side of the homeland, a dagger that we will take out in a peaceful, civilized way and upholding the principles of international law.
The U.S. military base occupies an area of 117.6 square kilometers of Cuban national territory, occupied since 1903 against the will of the Caribbean people as a result of an Agreement for the Coal and Naval Stations signed between the government of the United States and the government of Cuba, presided at that time by Tomas Estrada Palma.
On multiple occasions, Cuba has rejected the U.S. military presence and has demanded the return of the illegally occupied territory in the westernmost province of Guantanamo, a situation that only responds to the political objective of trying to outrage the sovereign rights of the Caribbean nation.
